This course will explore the role and responsibilities of the safeguarding lead or focal point in an organisation and provide resources and tools to carry this out effectively.    

It is good practice for organisations to designate a safeguarding lead or focal point. However, it is important to be clear what this role involves, whether policies and procedures are in place and support this role and also what kind of safeguarding risks and scenarios there are. Over a two week period with 3 live sessions, this course explores the role and expectations of a safeguarding lead, explores potential scenarios and risk assessment and provides resources and support for the role.  

Course Objectives:  

  • To have a shared understanding of safeguarding in international development and humanitarian aid 

  • To explore the expectations and responsibilities of a safeguarding lead or focal point  

  • To explore potential safeguarding risks and scenarios in different settings,  

  • To know where to get further support and to connect with others in this role  

  • To identify key areas of action  

Course Structure:  

The total time commitment of this course will be in the region of 1.5 days (approximately 10.5 hours). This will comprise an introductory session, self-paced task, a webinar and a wrap up/action planning session.  

Monday 18 January 2021 – 10.30 - 12.00: Online Session - Introduction 

Wednesday 20 January– 10.00 - 12.00: Online Session - orientation and task setting  

Wednesday 20 – Wednesday 27 January: Self-paced task  

Wednesday 27 January – 14.00 - 16.00: Online Session - Review of task, action planning  

Throughout the course there will be opportunities for discussion, peer learning/networking and questions via the online learning platform. 

Who is it for: This session will be particularly useful for any individuals who have been designated with some responsibility for safeguarding in their organisation whether a trustee, member of staff or in another role. 

Software: Zoom (all you need is a charged laptop, tablet or mobile and internet connection to join the session)
