This article looks at the digital security threats faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) aid workers, including being ‘outed online, leaking of sexually explicit material, blackmailing etc. It points out that most of the humanitarian and development work that is done globally is done in states where local legislation and attitudes are hostile to LGBTQI workers. While the article focuses on digital security threats, it also sets out how these threats may also contribute to threats in person. The article then sets out strategies that NGOs and aid workers (both LGBTQI and their colleagues) can take to identify, mitigate and respond to these threats. These include creating safe spaces for LGBTQI staff, reviewing the organisation’s internet security, checking settings on digital platforms and rapidly responding to threats.
